Philip J. Austrom began playing trumpet at the young age of 11 in Indianapolis, IN and has been very involved in both jazz bands and concert winds ever since. During his time at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, Phil was a part of the prestigious state and national championship winning marching band, The Spirit of Central. In 2008 they won the state championship and placed third nationally that year, having won national titles in 2004 and 2006. Phil was awarded the national Louis Armstrong Outstanding Jazz Student Award in 2012 as a senior.
Currently, Phil is entering fourth year of General Music Studies at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) School of Music, studying with Professor Alan Matheson. Phil has been active with the Jazz ensembles, Concert Winds, Chamber ensembles, and African Drumming and Dance ensembles at UBC. In addition, Phil has performed and recorded with Rebel on a Mountain and currently performs with Bowen and the Uproar. He and his band mates have won UBC’s Last Band Standing competition for the past two years. Phil loves music, performing, skiing and his family.
